Thessaloniki. The city was founded in 315 BC. by the Macedonian king Cassander and named after his wife, who was the half-sister of Alexander the Great. A walk through the city center and its Castles reveals its long and important history with its remarkable Byzantine monuments, Roman columns, early Christian and Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, synagogues, Jewish markets and ornate mansions, where they lived rulers of the time.

Modern Thessaloniki, the “bride of Thermaikos”, as they called it, is the second largest city, the “co-capital” of Greece and the largest in Macedonia with a population of over one million. It is a European, cosmopolitan city, which is built semi-circularly and amphitheatrically in the gulf of Thermaikos. In 1997 it became the cultural capital of Europe.

Important and historically and religiously interesting buildings are located in the Upper Town, such as the old Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos the Orphan and the Monastery of Vlatades which were built in the 14th century AD, as well as the Church of Saint David.
