Day trip to Tower in the water Edessa & Pozhar
Edessa
“Tower in the water” literally means the name of Edessa from ancient times, because the city at that time had and still has a strong liquid element (rivers and waterfalls, hence its names: Edessa (vedes in Phrygian was water or tower in the water). The city was founded in 813 BC by Heraklides Karanos under the name “Edessa” 4 rivers flow through Edessa, which form 12 waterfalls. The twelve waterfalls of Edessa are located on the edge of the city’s citadel in a park that spans 100,000 sq.m. which is also known to the locals as the “eyebrow of the city”.
Both of the waterfalls can be visited. Among them is the municipal tourist kiosk PISINES which has been in operation continuously since 1953. Its name is due to the swimming pools that were created by the Germans in 1942 for local tourist development and shaped the area. Steps and paths even lead behind the falls. The water of the Waterfalls comes from the springs of the Agra-Vryton-Nissi wetland which are fed by the snows of Kaimaktsalan. The large waterfall, known as Karanos, is 70 meters high and is illuminated at night. The Double Waterfall is twice as long as the Great Waterfall because it is divided into two waterfalls that feed the D.E.H factory under the rock. Access and viewing of the waterfall is mainly from the Waterfall Park.
Pozhar
The Pozhar Baths, (the name comes from the Slavic word “Пожар” which means fire, conflagration, or heat). They are also known as Baths of Loutraki, Baths of Aridaia, or simply Baths. They are thermal baths, located near Loutraki in the Regional Unit of Pella, 13 km west of Aridaia. These are mineral springs, springing up at a temperature of 37°C, with a remarkable chemical composition. The warm water has a healing effect and is drinkable.
Visitors use it for spa therapy, stimulation and relaxation, while the waters help fight circulatory, respiratory, rheumatic, gynecological and dermatological diseases.
The spa town is 3 kilometers from the village of Loutraki and is located in the valley of the stream of Agios Nikolaos. The oldest name of the stream was “Toplitsa”, which means in Slavic, loosely translated: “Thermopotamos”.
A complex of about 17 caves has been discovered in the area, with abundant findings from prehistoric times, which are exhibited in the small museum of Loutra. The area has been declared a cave park (Almopia Cave Park) and is the first of its kind in Greece.
The indoor swimming pools and hammams located in the interior of Loutropolis lead the visitor to enjoy the beneficial properties of thermalism.
